Board firmware

Your app runs on a phone, a computer or a server. The firmware runs inside the device itself, on its microcontroller. It is the layer that turns the board on, configures its clocks, reads each sensor, controls each output, puts the device to sleep and sends data to your app. Writing it needs datasheets and an oscilloscope, not only a code editor. We write that layer and give your team a documented interface to build on.

The code that runs inside the microcontroller on your board: it starts the chip, reads the sensors, drives the outputs, manages power and talks to your app or cloud.

When you need it

  • The board works electrically but it does nothing yet, because no code runs on it.
  • Your application code is ready and needs drivers and a hardware abstraction layer.
  • You need production test firmware or a bootloader.

What you hand us

  • Hardware design files and the target microcontroller.
  • The interface your application expects (API, protocol, message format).
  • Existing code, however rough.

What you get back

  • Board support package, drivers and a documented hardware abstraction layer.
  • Power management, bootloader and firmware-update path where required.
  • Hardware test firmware for bring-up and production testing.
  • Source code in your repository with build instructions.

How we do it

We work in C and C++ on ARM Cortex-M, ESP32 and similar platforms, using vendor SDKs or Zephyr and FreeRTOS depending on the project. Every driver is verified on the bench against the hardware, not only compiled.

The line between our code and yours is agreed at the start and documented, so your team can extend the application without touching the low-level layer.

Questions about board firmware

Do you write the application firmware too?

We can, but many clients prefer to keep the application in-house. We focus on the hardware-facing layer and make it easy to build on.

Which microcontrollers do you work with?

Mostly STM32, nRF52/nRF53, ESP32 and RP2040-class devices. Other families are possible after a short feasibility check.

Send us what you have. We tell you what it takes to finish it.
